GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, more commonly referred to as heartburn or reflux occurs when stomach contents backs up into the esophagus (i.e. the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach). Medications can provide relief for the symptoms, but if issue persistent, this could be a sign of another issue, which, left untreated can lead to a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett’s Esophagus.
